Making Connections: Theoretical Framework & Intervention Development”

Final Course Assignment Instructions

REQUIRED High States Assignment: 25% of final grade

Students will be able to assess potential theoretical frameworks that could be used as the foundation for proposed intervention development to address a health concern within a local community. Building upon knowledge and practice skills discussed in this course and previous program curricula, students will apply this information to assess the potential applicability of a specific theory/model/framework in the creation of a health intervention. Through multiple modalities of writing, oral communication, and digital technology, students will express the importance of a specific theoretical frame to serve as the basis of strategy development in order to reduce a potential health concern facing a local community. Students will develop engaging materials to both educate and advocate for selecting a specific theoretical approach. Through this assignment, students will

·         Assignment includes 3 stages:

1.       Create an infographic theory selection statement including (5%)

a.       Brief information about the theory/model/framework (key constructs & overview)

b.       Brief preliminary statistics on focal health issue

c.        Brief statement why this theory/model/framework was chosen for this project

d.       General draft outline of infographic structure (see points from infographic elements)

2.       Design an infographic including (15%)

a.       Brief explanation and statistics related to focal health issue

b.       Brief background information on selected theory/model/framework

c.        Brief explanation of selected theory/model/framework

d.       Brief list of “pros/cons” of selected theory/model/framework

e.       Brief list of how selected theory/model/framework could be used to address focal health issue

3.       Apply infographic information in development of a presentation including (5%)

a.       Brief overview of infographic content

b.       Brief background on population’s health concern (e.g. define the condition and statistics)

c.        Brief statement of appropriate selected theoretical application to address identified health concern

(students should approach presentation as if they are at a strategy development meeting with the department of health working on the development of a new intervention to address previously identified health concern)

·         Final grade includes points for all assignment activities as well as spelling/grammar, formatting, and following instructions for the project components

Instructor reserves the right to not accept late assignments and/or to deduct points if accepted!

Step 1:

Students must use a theory/model/framework discussed over the course of the semester. Therefore, the focal theory/model/framework selected is the starting point for this project. (Please review content from previous assignments, course materials, and text content from the course)

Step 2:

Students will review material on the selected theory/model/framework. Students will develop a brief statement that includes background and explanation of the theory in their own words. Students will develop a pros/cons list about the selected theory/model/framework this may include points like “how broad its application has been in addressing different health concerns”, “how useful it has been in leading to associated behavior change”, “how simple/complex it is compared to other theoretical frames”. Students will include a brief preliminary amount of information about the focal health topic. This statement should end with a brief draft outline of the infographic structure.

Step 3:

After coalescing the information from step 2, students will create the infographic using any of the free infographic development sites included here or using PowerPoint. Students must make sure that the infographic contains not only text, but also applicable free images. Remember, an infographic is similar to a billboard advertisement and therefore needs to have a pointed message and is appealing to the audience. Students will need to complete a brief reference list for the information presented in the infographic. This document should be uploaded to BlackBoard with the infographic.

Step 4:

After creating the infographic, students will prepare a brief presentation (approximately 8-10 minutes) for a mock strategy meeting with colleagues at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. First, students should discuss the content included on the infographic. Second, students will present information on a specific community health concern. Students should use the provided websites or others to provide the necessary information. Additionally, students should focus on information related to the general demographics of the population impacted by the focal health concern as well as the statistics related to that issue amongst the population.

Finally, students will use the demographic profile and health concern data as additional background to support an argument for why the selected theoretical framework would be a good option in developing a health intervention to address this aforementioned health concern. The infographic reference list should also include an additional reference for the data sources used to inform the final presentation.

Step 5:

After completing the assignment pieces (i.e. infographic with reference list), these must be uploaded to BlackBoard. The reference list should follow the guidelines suggested by APA or the AMA.
