Nursing theory has undergone a process of evolution since the 1960s, progressing from conceptual models to concept analysis and ultimately to mid-range theories. These mid-range theories are primarily developed to facilitate qualitative research, focusing on patient issues, addressing patient needs, identifying interventions, and adapting to changing patterns of patient care. To ensure the validity, coherence, and meaningfulness of these interventions, these mid-range theories are categorized into various patterns.
The utilization of mid-range theories in the field of nursing has played a crucial role in establishing conceptual frameworks that are applicable to both practice and research. Despite offering a more specific structure compared to grand theories, mid-range theories possess a conceptual simplicity that can prove advantageous but also limiting. The necessity to maintain a concise set of concepts in order to promote applicability and empirical testing may hinder the ability to address the inherent complexity of certain clinical phenomena. Furthermore, occasional resistance to the adoption of mid-range theories could arise from misconceptions regarding their practical utility, emphasizing the need for improved communication and education regarding their applicability.
One of the most widely employed mid-range models in nursing is Mishel’s “Uncertainty Theory.” This theory has proven valuable in addressing the experience of uncertainty in illness situations, providing a framework for comprehending and tackling the lack of clarity and predictability in nursing care. Recent references supporting the application of mid-range theories include Mishel’s (2019) exploration of uncertainty in the context of chronic illness and the collaborative work of Lenz et al. (2020) in the development of mid-range nursing theories. These references highlight the enduring relevance of mid-range theories in contemporary nursing practice.
In conclusion, mid-range theories in nursing offer advantages in terms of applicability and ease of comprehension, but they also encounter challenges related to their limited scope and resistance to adoption. Nevertheless, the development of conceptual models and numerous other mid-range theories by nurses demonstrates an awareness of these limitations. Nursing knowledge encompasses a range of patterns that are explained to us through mid-range empirical, ethical, aesthetic, sociopolitical, and personal theories, thereby shedding light on the nature of our world and our areas of interest.
