System of Equations Project
You are going to create a poster demonstrating your skills in solving systems of equations. You will be given a prompt, in which you will create two equations based on the real-world problem. Then you will solve the system of equations using graphing AND substitution, and then explain your finding.
Prompt: BATTLE OF THE ARTIST!!!!!! You are talking to your best friend about your favorite musical artists. So, you will have 2 musical artists battling each other. In this scenario, we aren’t worried about how many instagram followers or listeners, or their artistic abilities but how much money they’re making as a result of those things. It is your job to determine which artist is better based on the total amount of money they earned on their last album and how much they make per concert.
Project Components
Title, Name, Word Problem
Variables Defined and Two (2) Equations. They must have a solution so they should have different slopes.
Graphing Method Solution: Graph must be labeled and numbered. Both lines must be graphed correctly and the solution should be identified as a coordinate point. Solution should be in Quadrant 1.
Substitution Method Solution: If both equations are in standard form, one must be rewritten so it has an isolated variable. All steps of substitution must be shown in a neat and organized fashion (The original substitution to find the first variable, then the second substitution to find the second variable).
Explanations for both the graphing and substitution method, stating what steps were mathematically taken.
Explanation of solution with regard to the context of the problem. (Explain why one artist is better than the other)
A few sentences explaining which method you prefer when solving a system of equations and why.
You will complete this project in tasks due at the end of each class:
Task 1: Determine your 2 artist, research numbers (make up if not available) (due 1/29) Task 2: Create your equations, solve by graphing and substitution (due 1/30)
Task 3: Rough Draft of your poster (due 1/31)
Task 4: Poster (due 2/2)
This will be an Assessment Grade for MP3. Any poster submitted after 2/2/2024 will be subject to the syllabus guidelines on late assignments. If absent any day, you must see me to discuss an extension.
