Frankenstein is considered a Gothic Romance. The literary movement called Gothic fiction and romance developed during the end of the 1700s and lasted through the 1800s with a number of revivals. Gothic fiction and romance have also seen a resurgence in the 1900s. Gothic fiction emphasizes the human experience in relation to the world and the value of that experience, exposed through feelings and emotions, to the growth of the individual. Oftentimes, dreams, monsters, ghosts, and terrifying supernatural situations were the mediums authors used to force characters’ introspection that would transform their lives.
