1. Exposure and response prevention is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy that is effective for treating illness anxiety disorder and is known as health anxiety. The main components are exposure and response prevention. The combination of these components helps the client learn that their anxiety will decrease over time without engaging in the compulsive behaviors. The text lists these components as part of Exposure and Response Prevention; “development of a fear hierarchy, exposure and response prevention beginning with the least anxiety provoking items from the fear list, imaginal exposure (imagining that one has an illness) can also be used, bibliotherapy using CBT principles may be helpful” (Reichenberg & Seligman, 2016, p. 297). The goal of this is to address the fear through therapy.
2. Rumination disorder is a condition where an individual repeatedly regurgitates food which is re-chewed, re-swallowed, or spit out. This behavior is not due to a medical condition but rather a psychological one. During regurgitation, previously swallowed food will be brought up into the mouth with no apparent disgust, involuntary retching, or nausea (American Psychiatric Association, 2022). Social workers must understand this disorder to apply the appropriate interventions and support systems.
3. Encopresis is a condition characterized by the repeated passing of stool into inappropriate places, such as clothing or the floor, by a child who is past the age of toilet training. The textbook states, “encopresis can contribute to family distress, resistance on the part of the child, embarrassment at school, and a decline in school performance (Reichenberg & Seligman, 2016, p. 342). The typical client characteristics of Encopresis include child who is facing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and/or emotional and behavioral problems (Reichenberg & Seligman, 2016, p. 343). Encopresis can contribute to family distress, resistance on the part of the child, embarrassment at school and a decline in school performance (Reichenberg & Seligman, 2016, p. 342). Some typical characteristics to consider are age, gender, behavioral signs, emotional and social impact, and family dynamics.
