It’s time to sharpen your research skills! For this assignment, you will write a 500-word analysis of three articles published in the Columbus Ledger newspaper during the First World War. Your analysis should summarize and explain the significance of each newspaper article. The articles should focus on some aspect of the war. For example, one of your articles could describe a particular battle or could profile a general in the U.S. Army. The other two could focus on politics, the local impact of the war, or the defense industry. It doesn’t matter what your articles are about, but they should have something to do with the First World War. Keep scrolling for more specific instructions.
Directions:
- Find three articles published in the Columbus Ledger between 1914 and 1918. The articles must have something to do with the First World War (or Great War). Written and video instructions for accessing the Columbus Ledger through Newsbank have been attached below. Don’t just choose the first articles you run across. Find some that interest you in some way.
- Clip and save the articles as PDF files.
- Write a 500-word analysis that summarizes and offers the significance of each article. Include the dates of the articles. You may want to use the American Yawp textbook or the PowerPoint lecture on the First World War to help contextualize the articles and explain the significance of each one. You are not required to use MLA or any other format when writing the analysis. I simply want to know what the articles are about and why they are important. (You are not required to write a 500-word analysis for each article. You only need to write one 500-word analysis for all three articles.)
- Save your analysis as a Word document or PDF and post it to Cougar View.
- You should also post the three Columbus Ledger articles to Cougar View so I can check your sources. I will deduct points if you don’t include the three articles.
