Identities

Minimum 700 words in the body of the paper (excluding title and the reference list)

In this reflection paper, you are to critically engage the topic of the social construction of identity in your life.

How is your perception of your own identity related to or affected by social and cultural structures, ideas or conventions? Please discuss and provide examples of how at least one of your identities (i.e., race, ethnicity, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, religion, disability status, age, generation, regional origin, national identity, language, and intersectionalities, among others) is shaped, or has been shaped, by cultural and societal influences within contexts of equality and inequality. That is, you will analyze how your identity is socially or culturally constructed, and how equality/ inequality is involved in the shaping of your identity by social/cultural influences. Please integrate course material (concepts, theories, discussions, lectures, readings). Cite at least one course reading and one appropriate outside source. All course materials are posted in the syllabus and on Canvas.

Submission requirementNo AI generated text is allowed in your submission. If you use AI tools in an appropriate manner as discussed in class (such as for brainstorming, generating ideas, etc.), you must include an AI use statement at the end of your paper to specify which AI tool you use and how you use it. You must engage with your sources in your paper to provide evidence for your argument, and include links to all outside sources in your references, and/or upload the PDF files of your main sources.

Instruction: As this paper will analyze how your identity is shaped by social/cultural values, conventions, or practice in relation to equality, you will use the first person “I” in the essay. But don’t forget that this is an analytical essay. You will describe your experience and analyze what social/cultural conventions, values, or expectations have shaped your identity, and how equality/ inequality is involved in the shaping of your identity by social/cultural influences. Here are the three steps or components that I suggest you consider for reflection paper #3: a. the description of your identity b. how social/cultural ideas or influences have shaped your identity. c. how equality/inequality is involved in the social construction of your identity.

Please review the rubrics before you start writing the paper. You can use APA or MLA citation format, and should include intext citations and a reference list for either citation format.

Format: double space, Times New Roman, 12 font size. Submit a word document or a PDF file.

A few notes about reflection paper #3:

The paper must address two questions:

1. How have one or more of your identities been shaped by social and cultural structures, ideas, expectations, or conventions? For this, you need to describe your own experience of a particular aspect of your identity (or multiple aspects, like gender and cultural identities), and you can choose to focus on any aspect that you are interested in describing/analyzing. Here is how you approach it:

  • Start by identifying the social expectations and values that have been important to the identity you choose to analyze.
  • Try to characterize the interaction between the way you define yourself/your identity or the potential ways in which you define yourself on the one hand, and the social/cultural expectations and values on the other

2. How does the interaction between your identity and social expectations involve equality/inequality? For identity construction, equality can be defined as equal opportunities for everyone to define their identity in any way they choose, to express their identity, and to be treated equally however they define and express their identity as far as they are legal and not violating other people’s rights.
