SMART Goals (24 points)

Setting effective goals will help guide you on your path in life.  Goals help you develop a clear picture of what you hope to accomplish at different periods in your life.  Making goals is easy, sticking to them may not be.  You will need to decide how you will do this.  The following steps will help you set SMART goals for the future.

When writing your goals, use the acronym SMART:

S          Specific                        What do you want to achieve?

M         Measurable                How will you measure your progress toward your goal?

i.e. money saved, pounds lost, grades earned etc.

A          Attainable                  Is your goal possible to achieve in the time frame you

have set?

R          Relevant                     Does this goal make sense for you?

T          Time-related               What is a realistic time frame to achieve this goal?

An endpoint will give you a clear target.

The Assignment:

For each of the 4 time periods of your life listed on the next page, write 3 SMART goals.  Be sure to breakdown each of the 12 goals into the 5 component parts (Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-related) as in the example on the next page. Use the provided table to complete your SMART goals.

If you need to, watch the video again under the Assignments button.  When you are done, you will have 12 separate goals (each will be written as a sentence and then broken down into the SMART goal sections – see example at the end of the next page).

4 time periods (Write 3 goals for each time period for a total of 12 goals):

  • 3 goals you want to achieve before the end of this semester.
  • 3 goals you want to achieve one year after you graduate.
  • 3 goals you want to achieve after your 5th year out of college.
  •  3 goals you want to achieve after you turn age 65.

Example – write goal statement and then break it down into 5 component parts in the provided table:

Goal Statement:  I will eat 4 servings of fruits and vegetables every day by December 31, 2023.
S (Specific)M (Measurable)A (Attainable)R (Relevant)T (Time-related)
4 servings of fruits and vegetables every day.The number of servings is 4 and it will be done each day. This is a realistic number of fruits and vegetables for a person to eat.  I have most of the year to reach this goal.I can purchase the food and cook it for myself.I have set a date of December 31, 2023
