Requirements for Argumentative Essay

1. By now you have chosen your topic for investigation, a societal problem/issue, and it has been approved by me. Your research should be thorough, examining surrounding issues and various viewpoints. In order to accomplish this, I will require a minimum of 10 outside sources of research. You should already have about ½ of the sources you need from the previous writing assignment. You may use well over 10 sources if you choose; some of you may have to.

2. Of the 10 sources, 5 must be scholarly. The other 5 may not be categorized as scholarly, but they must be credible sources. In other words, you must determine if the source is reliable and be prepared to defend your use of such source(s) if I determine said source is unacceptable. (NO Wikipedia or online reference sites. You can find all reference sources through A.C. Buehler Library. See approval from me for sources outside of the library databases.)

3. Your page length will depend on you: the issues surrounding your topic; the thoroughness of your research; your thoughtfulness expressed in your paper:BackgroundCritical Thinking via analysis, evaluation, logical reasoning, ethical appeals, and possibly pathetic appealsCharacteristics of the Rogerian argumentDirection, Unity, Coherence, & supporting evidenceUse of evidence to support your perspective (majority of argument should be in your words, not that of the research)Use of all sources cited in the text, as well as a works cited pageProper development of introduction and conclusionAppropriate structure: organization of topics and details within the various parts of the essayCounterarguments and/or concessions, as well as varied viewpoints

4. Your topic must be an argument, meaning that you are taking a stand on an issue. Identify your purpose to determine your tone of voice and your intended audience. Your Annotated Bibliography asks you to come up with a question about an issue; this assignment requires you to develop a well-informed decision about your topic based on the answers and questions developed from the exploratory assignment. With your new found knowledge (or continued questions) you will develop a strong and focused thesis statement.

5. Research must be documented MLA style: parenthetical notation and a works cited page.

6. Avoid 2nd person (the use of “we, us, you, your, you’re,” etc.); you must remain in 3rd person and 1st person (non-dominant).
