SCENARIO
Maria is an RN who works the night shift on an oncology unit. She approaches Elena, the day shift nurse, for a report. Elena immediately begins to complain about the patient in Room 345. She says:
“That patient thinks she knows everything because she is a nurse! She questions everything and wants to know why the medication was ordered and why she had to go to x-ray. I have had the worst time getting anything done! Have fun with her tonight!”
CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONS
- How should Maria respond to Elena?
- What are some barriers that may impact effective communication with the patient?
- What communication skills should Maria use when interacting with the patient?
